The job a trade website does

What a tradesman's website has to do

Fancy design doesn't win jobs. These six things do, and every Upkept site is built around them.

Ring you from a phone

Most people look you up on their phone. A call button on every page means one tap and you're talking.

Show you're the real thing

Your registrations, memberships and insurance where people look for them. Only the ones you really have.

Say where you work

The towns you cover, in plain words, so you get calls from your patch and not from three counties away.

Show the work

The jobs you do and the jobs you want more of, each with its own page that Google can find.

Answer the usual questions

Call-out charges, how soon you can come, what happens next. Answered on the site, they stop being phone calls.

Load on a weak signal

Light, fast pages that open quickly on a phone in a car park or on a building site.

Websites for your trade

Each trade has its own customers, rules and questions. Start with yours.

Builder or done for you?

A website builder, or someone to build it for you?

Plenty of tradespeople search for a website builder. It's the cheapest route, and for some it's the right one. Here's an honest look at the three ways to get a site, using prices published on each company's UK website.

More trades

Roofers, landscapers, decorators, cleaners and handymen

The same service, shaped around what your customers ask before they ring.

Websites for roofers

Roofing work comes in two kinds: the urgent call after a storm, and the big planned job. Your site needs to handle both.

  • A fast way to call about a leak or storm damage, with a word on how quickly you can make it safe.
  • Proof you know the job: membership of the Competent Roofer scheme or the NFRC, if you have it, and your insurance.
  • What your guarantees cover on new roofs and repairs.
  • The kinds of roof you work on: pitched, flat, slate, tile, leadwork, chimneys, guttering.

Home, roof repairs, new roofs and re-roofing, flat roofs, chimneys and leadwork, guttering and fascias, emergency repairs, areas covered and contact.

Your site launches with outdoor photos chosen for exterior trades, in a design theme made for hands-on trades like roofing.

Websites for landscapers and gardeners

People buy garden work with their eyes, and many of them want someone for the whole year, not just one job.

  • Finished gardens, patios and lawns like the one they want.
  • How a project runs, from the first visit and a design to the build.
  • Regular maintenance: what a visit includes and how often you come.
  • Membership of a body such as the Association of Professional Landscapers, if you belong.

Home, garden design, patios and paving, fencing, lawns and turfing, garden maintenance, finished projects, areas covered and contact.

Your site launches with garden and landscaping photos, ready for the jobs you want more of.

Websites for painters and decorators

Decorators are invited into the rooms people care most about, so tidiness and finish sell the job.

  • Interior and exterior work, wallpapering and any specialist finishes.
  • How you protect floors and furniture, and how you leave the room.
  • Insurance, and membership of a scheme such as Dulux Select Decorators or the Painting and Decorating Association, if you have it.
  • Whether you take on commercial work, and when.

Home, interior decorating, exterior painting, wallpapering, commercial work, areas covered and contact.

Your site launches with photos of finished interiors, in a design theme made for decorators and family firms.

Websites for cleaners

You're asking people for a key to their home or office. Trust is the whole sale.

  • Who will be cleaning, whether staff are DBS checked, and your insurance.
  • What a regular clean includes, and how a deep clean or end-of-tenancy clean differs.
  • How you price: by the hour, by the visit or by the job.
  • The areas you cover, and how to get a quote or book.

Home, regular cleaning, deep cleans, end-of-tenancy cleans, office and commercial cleaning, prices, areas covered and contact.

Our Fresh design theme was made for cleaners and gardeners: bright, airy and easy to read on a phone.

Websites for handymen

Handyman customers usually have a list of small jobs and want to know you'll do them all in one visit.

  • A clear list of the jobs you take on, from shelves and flat-pack to small repairs.
  • How you charge: hourly, by the half day, or a minimum call-out.
  • How far ahead you're booked, and the areas you cover.
  • That you're insured, and real reviews from people you've helped.

Home, jobs I do, prices, areas covered and contact.

Your site launches with photos chosen for building and repair work, and every page carries a call button.

FAQ

Tradespeople ask us

Do I need a website if I'm on Checkatrade or MyBuilder?

Many trades use both. A directory profile sits next to your competitors and runs on the directory's rules. Your own site shows only you, is there when people search your name, and gives your Google Business Profile somewhere to point.

How much does a website for a tradesman cost?

Anything from nothing, on a builder's free plan with the builder's branding, to a few thousand pounds for an agency build. Upkept is £99 a month with everything included. Our guide lists published UK prices for each option. Read the website cost guide.

Can I show my accreditations and registrations?

Yes: the schemes you belong to, with registration numbers if you like, such as Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, TrustMark or the FMB. We never add a scheme you haven't told us about.

Will my reviews show on my site?

Real reviews you've earned can go on your site, with your customers' permission. We never write or invent reviews.

What if I don't have a logo or photos?

That's fine. Your site launches with professional photos chosen for your trade. If you have a logo you can upload it from your dashboard; if not, your business name is set in a strong, clean style instead.

Do you build websites for other trades?

Yes. Locksmiths, window cleaners, tree surgeons, pest control, removals and more. If you work on people's homes or businesses, Upkept is built for you.
